Epic Battle Looms Between Palm Pre and iPhone 3

It looks like Apple is concerned that the first real ‘iPhone killer’ is about to hit the streets. This sought after title is being gradually bestowed onto the highly anticipated Palm Pre.

While many cell phone manufacturers have tried to develop a suitable competitor to the iPhone, perhaps none have come closer than Palm. The Pre is reported to have many features the Golden Apple lacks, like cut and paste, integrated contacts and a full QWERTY keyboard in addition to the must have touch screen.

The first signs of Apple’s nervousness were threats of legal action against Palm for patent violations. When this tactic failed to pick up steam iPhone 3 rumors began twirling. Finally, on Tuesday, Apple debuted the operating system for the new device.

The iPhone will attempt to cut the Pre’s lead by adding cut and paste, multimedia messaging and a universal search app, called Spotlight, that will search the web and several applications in the phone. However the iPhone will still not be able to run multiple applications at once and has yet to grow a real keyboard, alienating consumers who would rather not smear grease from their french fries all over the screen of their cell phone.

Undoubtedly the iPhone 3 was inevitable, but the rumored summer release of the Pre may have lit a fire under the developers at Apple. Take Steve Jobs out of the equation and for the first time in a while the Mac Pack finds itself on the defensive.

The technical differences between the two devices may become a sideshow, and this battle could ultimately become a struggle between cult-like brand loyalty or the desire for something new. By years end we should know if Pre was able to crush an Apple in the Palm of its hand.

Flash Will be Available on Pre

Adobe's Flash 10 will be integrated into the Palm Pre's browser at some point in 2009, Adobe has recently announced. The company has also started a $10 million fund to help nurture Flash application development.
The addition of Flash onto the Pre has given Palm's newest device an edge over it's most prominent competitors, Apple's iPhone and the BlackBerry series from Research in Motion.
In addition to Flash, Adobe will release Adobe Reader Mobile SDK which will bring advanced PDF functionality to both e-book readers and phones.
The newest applications will be available on Palm OS, Windows Mobile, and Android operated phones, and Sony's Reader e-book device, however there is no word yet on whether or not Amazon's Kindle will be included.

GSM Version of Pre Spotted in Barcelona

A GSM version of the Palm Pre has been spotted at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. No official announcement was made by Palm, but some lucky people from PreCommunity got some time with a demo device and, lo and behold, a SIM card was spotted underneath the battery cover.
This has fueled speculation that the Pre will not be exclusive to Sprint's CDMA network for very long. The Barcelona SIM card was from Europe's Vodafone, but there are no leads yet as to whether T-Mobile or AT&T will get their hands on the Pre in the US. Given the sensitive nature of manufacturer - carrier relationships, we shouldn't expect any official announcements from Palm until any possible deal is finalised.

preDevCamp To Come One Week After Pre Debut

Fans of the Palm Pre, who are not officially affiliated with Palm, have announced that events are being organised to bring together developers and testers one week after the Pre's release.
These events, dubbed preDevCamp, will be held in multiple locations across the US, and even in international locations as far flung as Macau, Mumbai, and Paris.
Attendees will include mobile and web devolopers, UI designers, and testers. Those attending should be prepared to work on development projects while there, as well as test new applications to check for bugs. Projects will include individual and team efforts. Investors Love The Palm Pre

In today's gloomy economic environment, many investors have cut back on their stock holdings, or shunned the market altogether. However, Palm has successfully bucked this trend, thanks in no small part to the upcoming Pre.
Ever since its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier in the month, the Pre has helped to more than double the price of Palm's shares. And despite the prospect of a looming legal fight with Apple, the shares are still up 138% year to date.

Is A Legal Battle Between Palm and Apple Imminent?

Apparently the touch screen technology that will be available on the Palm Pre has raised some eyebrows at Apple. A few days ago, during a recent earnings conference call, Apple's COO, Tim Cook, hinted that his company would pursue legal action against any competitor that 'ripped off their IP'. Here is a full transcript of the conversation between him and one of the reporters:

Question: “Now a number of competitors coming for iPhone. Their own variance on customer experience, Palm Pre, Android, Windows. How do you think about sustaining your leadership in sector?”

Cook: “I would say, first of all, it’s difficult to judge products that are not yet in the market. The iPhone has sold over 17 million units thus far. It’s received the highest overall customer satisfaction from many different surveys. And we’ve said since the beginning software’s the key ingredient, and we believe we’re still years ahead on software. I would include with software the Applications Store ad you’ve seen the explosion with half a billion downloads.

”When you think of having multiple variations of displays, of resolutions and input methods, and of hardware, it’s a big challenge to a software developer and it’s not very enticing to build a different app for every one of these things. But we’ll see what people will do. We approached this business as a software platform business, so we’ve approached it fundamentally different than those who approached it only from a hardware point of view.

“We are confident with where we are competitively. We’re watching the landscape, we like competition. As long as they don’t rip off our IP, and if they do, we’ll go after anybody that does. I thought that might be your next question, so that’s why I wanted to get that out.”

Question: “Are you referring to Palm when you say ripping off IP?”

Cook: “I’m not talking about any specific company. I’m just making a general statement. We think competition is good, it makes us better. But we will not stand to have our IP ripped off. We will go after them with every weapon at our disposal. I don’t think I can be more clear than that.”

Not taking the threat lightly, Palm issued a statement through spokesperson Lynn Fox:

“Palm has a long history of innovation that is reflected in our products and robust patent portfolio, and we have long been recognized for our fundamental patents in the mobile space. If faced with legal action, we are confident that we have the tools necessary to defend ourselves.”

The point of contention is the ability to use two fingers on the touch screen. The iPhone utilizes this feature for tasks such as enlarging and shrinking pictures, and obviously believes that they have the sole right to manufacture technology with this ability.

Rumors Fly For The Pre's Release Date

All the excitement over the Palm Pre's impending release has cranked the rumor mill into overdrive. Earlier in the week it was reported on the TreoCentral Forum that February 15th would be the debut date. This information supposedly comes from an inside source at Sprint.
However, this sounds a little too soon to the guys over at Mobile Roar based on the fact that Mojo SDK and development for Palm WebOS are still private, and Palm would most likely want to launch the Pre with a developer following already established.
There have been several postings on Twitter claiming March 15th as the launch, with many of these also citing sources inside Sprint.
Another factor to consider is the recent class action lawsuit against Palm concerning the Treo 600 and 650. The plaintiffs in this case were awarded a $50-75 cash rebate on the purchase of a new Palm device. The point of concern is the rebate's March 25th expiration. Some have speculated that Palm will push the Pre's release beyond this date in order to manipulate rebate holders into clearing old merchandise from the shelves.
As of now, Palm has only indicated that the Pre would be available during the first half of 2009. It is widely believed that this is a polite way of saying May or June, and Palm is being deliberately vague to build anticipation.
